Dansforth 5K for Interact

Saturday, September 25th, 2010 Dansforth hosted it's first 5K to benefit Interact!

Thanks to the seemingly tireless efforts of a large team of volunteers it was a huge success! Our "Dansforth Athletic Club" team spent their time canvasing local businesses to bring in donations that covered our supplies and great raffle tickets items. They walked the neighborhoods handing out fliers in hurricane force winds and stifling heat. They designed T-shirts and Race Route signs, hauled cases of water, bags of bagels, donated items, stuffed race bags, handled set up and clean up and more!
Kate Bacon won the Women's Race with a time of 23:44! Dan Doebler took home with Men's prize with a finish of 20:20! Though the men's and women's races were separate, we bet Kate could have come pretty close to Dan's time but she is training for the Outer Banks Marathon and had run 10 miles in terrible heat just the evening before!

We are very proud of Dan and Kate and our runners up, Kim Mruk and Michelle Kumper for the women and Mark Rouse and Chris Bednar for the men!

All in all we had 40 runners and walkers who all did a fantastic job helping us "Spread The Health" like our motto says. We even had several children finish the run portion making us very proud that we are leading the way for a healthy next generation of athletes!

We were also thrilled to have friends join us from nearby neighborhoods and hope more will come share our community spirit next year!

Music provided by Robbie Austin got us all in the spirit and bagels, donuts and coffee provided by Brueggers, NY Bagels & Deli, Daylight Donuts and Krispy Kreme kept us happily energized.

Kristin Gyure and her team of volunteers did a great job keeping the rest of the kids happy with tattoos, jump ropes, hula hoops, corn hole and more!

Raffle Tickets were the hit of the day.... Beer from Heineken USA, Free Rounds of Golf from Heritage Golf Club, Jumping Beans Passes, Gift Certificates to local restaurants like Girasole, Gate House and Ale House all made for hefty tickets sales.

We hope everyone enjoys their prizes and remembers to thank all of our other sponsors whenever they are at their establishments. (For a complete list see below)

On a personal note, I am so very thankful for all of the constant support I was given from my team. I hope they each know how much their enthusiasm for this event and cause means to me. I think having this race was a dream of theirs for a long time as it was mine. With their help and only with their help, we were able to do something great for people in need.

Donations are still coming in but as of today, we have $1420 to give to Interact. That's NOT TOO SHABBY for a first time race!

Please check out Interact at http://www.interactofwake.org and see how you can help them in other ways to succeed in their mission of helping women and children victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

We are so lucky to have landed in the Dansforth Community and in Wake Forest. What a great, fun, awesome, hard-working, loving group of people we have here!

See you next year!

There will be Women’s and Men’s Fun Runs, walks & Kids games and competitions. Registration will remain open until the start of the races.

Whether athletic or not, Dansforth neighbors are friends that come together to help each other in times of need. Through this race, we hope to extend the reach of our friendship to the greater Wake Forest and Rolesville communities while supporting local business and fostering community spirit!

You do not need to be a runner to participate! Come to walk, or bring the kids to play and share our community spirit and desire to support a worthwhile cause!

Run for fun, and for good!
The Dansforth Athletic Club has selected Interact of Wake County as the recipient charity. Interact is a private, non-profit, United Way agency that provides safety, support, and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault. Interact fulfills this mission through the support of its volunteers and community. Last year, Interact provided assistance to 103 people within the Wake Forest and Rolesville areas alone.

Dansforth is on the map

Well, it appears now that Google Maps satellite images are updated to the point where the majority of the homes built the neighborhood are shown on the map. I am embedding an example here pinpointed at 9000 Dansforeshire Way. Zoom in, zoom out, play with it. You can then save this location in your 'Saved Locations' in Google Maps and then search and generate driving directions from Burlington Mills road. I do this all the time on my computer and on my mobile. Did you know Google Maps is also available for mobile phones? You can read about it in your browser here or navigate to http://www.google.com/m/products in your mobile device browser to download the application. It's very handy.
